Brushed vs. Brushless RC Motors: What's the Difference?

Motor type is one of the biggest factors in how an RC car feels to drive, how much it costs, and how forgiving it is of mistakes — and it's worth understanding before comparing specific models.

Brushed motors

Brushed motors are the simpler, older technology — physical brushes make contact with a spinning commutator to generate motion. They're less efficient and top out at lower speeds than brushless motors, but they're cheaper, more forgiving of hard use, and easier on the rest of the drivetrain and plastic parts. A great choice for beginners and casual backyard driving.

Brushless motors

Brushless motors use electronically commutated magnets instead of physical brushes, which makes them more efficient, more powerful, longer-lasting, and capable of significantly higher speeds — often close to double what a comparable brushed setup can do. The trade-off is cost (brushless-equipped cars and the ESCs that run them cost more) and the fact that more power puts more stress on the chassis, suspension, and gears, which means faster wear if you're not careful.

Which should you choose?

If you're new to the hobby, brushed is the more forgiving and budget-friendly starting point. If you already know you want speed and are ready to budget for the occasional broken part, brushless is worth the jump — many models are sold in both a brushed and a brushless trim, so you can often get the same chassis either way.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do brushless motors require more maintenance?

Less, if anything — brushless motors have no brushes to wear out or replace, which is one of their advantages over brushed motors long-term. The extra wear from brushless setups mostly shows up in the drivetrain and plastic parts due to the added power and speed, not the motor itself.

Can I upgrade a brushed car to brushless later?

Often yes, with a brushless conversion (new motor and ESC), but not always — some budget or all-in-one electronics setups aren't designed to be upgraded. Check whether the specific model supports a brushless conversion before assuming it does.
